Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 2026
Kumtuks (“Kumtuks”, “we”, “us”) is an educational project based in British Columbia, Canada, supported by the Global Civic Policy Society. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect through kumtuks.ca (the “Site”), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We handle personal information in line with British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and, where it applies, Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Contact form. When you write to us, we receive the reason for your message, your message, your first and last name, your email address, your phone number if you provide it, and how you prefer to be contacted.
- Newsletter. When you subscribe to updates, we receive your email address.
- Donations. Donations are made through a secure donation form provided by CanadaHelps, a registered Canadian charity. The form appears on our Donate page but is run by CanadaHelps, which processes the payment and issues the donation receipt. We never see your card or bank details. CanadaHelps shares with us the information needed to record and acknowledge your gift, such as your name, contact details and the amount, unless you choose to give anonymously.
- Emails and other correspondence you send us directly.
Information collected automatically
- Usage statistics. We use Google Analytics (through Google Site Kit) and Independent Analytics to understand how the Site is used — for example, which pages are visited, how visitors arrive, and the type of device and browser used. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies; Independent Analytics stores its statistics on our own website.
- Advertising measurement. We may use the Meta (Facebook) Pixel to measure how people who see our posts and ads on Facebook and Instagram use the Site. Meta may use cookies to connect this activity with your Meta account, in line with Meta’s own privacy policy.
- Technical information. Like most websites, our hosting provider records basic technical data such as IP address, browser type and the date and time of requests, to keep the Site secure and working.
How we use your information
- to answer your questions and requests;
- to send you the updates you asked for (you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email);
- to record and acknowledge donations;
- to understand how the Site is used and improve it;
- to keep the Site secure and to meet our legal obligations.
We do not sell or rent your personal information.
Who we share it with
We share personal information only with service providers that help us run the Site and our communications, and only for those purposes:
- Mailchimp (Intuit) — sends our newsletter;
- CanadaHelps — runs our donation form and processes donations (payments may be made by card, PayPal or other methods offered on the form);
- Cloudflare Turnstile — checks that messages sent through our contact form come from a person, not an automated program (it looks at technical information from your browser, such as your IP address, and does not use advertising cookies);
- Google — Google Analytics and YouTube (our videos are hosted on YouTube);
- Meta — the Meta Pixel described above;
- our web hosting provider, which stores the Site and the messages sent through the contact form.
Some of these providers store or process information outside Canada, including in the United States. When that happens, your information is subject to the laws of that country and may be accessed by its authorities. We may also disclose information when required by law.
Embedded videos and links
Our stories include videos embedded from YouTube. When you play a video, YouTube (Google) may set cookies and collect information about your viewing under Google’s privacy policy. The donation form on our Donate page is provided by CanadaHelps and may set its own cookies under CanadaHelps’ privacy policy. The Site also links to other websites, such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Patreon and CanadaHelps. Their privacy practices are their own, and we encourage you to read their policies.
Cookies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. The Site uses cookies needed for it to work (for example, for logged-in site editors) and cookies set by the analytics, advertising, video and donation services named above. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the Site will still work, although some embedded content may not. You can also opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on and manage Meta ad preferences in your Meta account settings.
How long we keep information
We keep contact form messages for as long as needed to respond and follow up, and generally no longer than two years. Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe. Donation records are kept as long as required for accounting and legal purposes.
Security
The Site uses an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and access to personal information is limited to people who need it to do their work. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Your choices and rights
You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or withdraw your consent to its use (for example, by unsubscribing from the newsletter). To make a request, contact us using the details below. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia.
Children
Our content is suitable for students, but the Site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last changed.
